Hi, my name is Ken Cosslett, I’m 74 years old.
I’ve been a member of the Choir for over 35Years.
I sing in the Top Tenor section.
I've been registrar of the Choir for more than 30 years.
These are some of my memories since I joined.
I have sung with the choir for more than 35 years, singing is my life, as a young man I was serving in the army with the “South Wales Borderers” where I first started to sing with their choir, a few years later I found Newport’s own male choir, I there learnt to sing my part as a 1st tenor.
Then there were concerts with the choir, where we sang all over the country, England, Scotland, Ireland, and of course all over Wales, Concerts I will never forget, firstly at the NEC Birmingham where we sang with the bands of of Grenadier Guards, Scots, Irish, and Welsh, Trumpeters of the Blues and Royals with Pipes and Drums. The Great Priory Church Malvern, The Royal Albert Hall London, Then there was the concert for the Dutch Royal Family at the Haig in Holland, Also for the British Ambassador to Paris, the first choir to sing at the British Embassy in France,
Then a trip to Toronto Canada where we sang three concerts under the baton of Mr John Jenkins, the choir had a standing ovation in the concert at the Marylake Shrine, Kings City Don Valley, we flew to Canada a week after 9-11, 2001, we were all very apprehensive about flying but over came it by singing. As you can see I love to travel, also I have met and sang with many famous people “Tom Jones” “Shirley Bassey” at the then Great Arms Park Cardiff, we have also sang for Prince Charles, and the Japanese's Emperor, at Cardiff Castle, With all I have done with the choir it as given me an insight into other lives and worlds.
If anyone is interested we practice every Monday & Thursday at the YMCA Mandalgief Road Newport,”There’s never a dull moment always something going on”, Bye for now. Ken
